While I was browsing at a local flea market, I found a gem of a vintage cosmetic suitcase. It was mint green, and only $1.00! I ended up planning an entire concept shoot around this suitcase. I recruited a friend’s daughter (Claire Pabst) to be my 60’s Vogue cover girl. After styling her hair and make-up we headed downtown to the bus station.
Notice the magazine cover? I took a head shot in the studio on the same day to create it. I used a real vintage cover to get the layout and font color.
Since I can remember I have been doing concept shoots with my daughter. Some are my idea, some are hers, and every once in a great while we brainstorm together……like for this shoot. She was going to be home visiting for a week from NYC. I wanted to do something out of the box and I suggested a circus theme. She is super big into American Horror Story, and wanted to do a vintage circus look, like the show. So with less than a week to plan, I ordered costume items and props and came up with a game plan for the set. We had a blast and to this day it is one of my favorite shoots..EVER!!
I used some red curtains I had in the studio, 2 different muslin backdrops, and an outdoor string of vintage lights for the main set. I bought a couple hula hoops from the dollar store, and gathered old suitcases I had.
I had the complete pleasure of working with Corrin Stellakis. Former Miss Teen NY 2014 and Miss MO World 2015.
Her and her mother were so nice and great to work with. She posed very naturally and elegantly.
For my first look, I had her bring a black dress. I pinned the floral crown in to add more of a dramatic effect. We shot at Union Station in St. Louis.
I loved the colors of the dress and flowers against the silver train car.
I also took some photos in the Drury Inn Hotel Lounge. The window lighting was amazing in there!
For the next look I asked her to bring her amazing Sherri Hill pageant gown. I wanted to shoot it in the city streets, so we went down to by the river front. I normally have the models toss the fabric on their dresses, but it was so windy I got exactly what I wanted naturally.
Corrin is probably the most mature 17 year old I have ever photographed. I can’t wait till I get another chance to do more.
